Friday, October 22nd, 2021 - Our first holistic management goal at Organic Chaos is weed management. When we first started working on our plot, our two main strategies to control weeds were cover cropping and utilizing hay mulch. Our experience so far has shown that growing a cover crop was successful in suppressing weed growth in our planting beds. In the first photo, you can see a stark contrast between the weed growth in the walkway compared to the bed where we had previously grown cowpea and sunn hemp cover crops. Due to the extensive weed proliferation in the walkways, even with the thick mats of hay mulch, we decided to plant ryegrass to create a grassed walkway to hopefully better address weeds moving forward. The second photo shows our freshly weeded walkways and after we seeded our ryegrass.
