As I was taking photos of this Apple of Peru (Nicandra physalodes) flower, I noticed what appears to be a hoverfly! As we learned in our intercropping case study, hoverflies are an effective pest predator for the biological control of aphids for lettuce production. We are growing four different lettuce varieties at Organic Chaos, and we haven't experienced any aphid damage. It seems that the flowers that are blooming in the buffer zone of our Incubator Farm may be attracting beneficial organisms, like the hoverfly, that have virtually eliminated pest pressure on our cash crops.
