Soil Organic Matter

Friday, November 19th, 2021 - Since we have been talking about compost and cover crops recently, here are some throwback photos from when we first started managing our plots around the end of September and early October. In the first photo, you can see how our soil looked when Carter and Noah first planted our cover crops. Following the termination of our cover crops, we spread out compost before planting our vegetable crops. By using both cover crops and compost in our planting beds, we strived to increase the organic matter of our soil to provide benefits such as increased water-holding capacity, microbial activity, and soil stability. In the subsequent photos, the beds visually display the rich dark color of the compost. Managing soil organic matter is especially important when working with Florida sandy soil.
